September, 2019 Newsletter

We are trying something different.  Dave Finn, our Club Secretary, has agreed to keep minutes of our meetings.  The minutes will be sent to all members each month.  This will be in addition to the President’s newsletter, which will look at coming events, future meetings, etc.

                                                                 MIOH Monthly Meeting Minutes

September 14, 2019

The meeting was called to order by President Len Coleman at approximately 10 a.m.

There were 29 members present, and no visitors

September birthdays include Dick Sisung, Julie Wilkins, Clyde Brasher, and Mark Wayner

Treasurer Rich Enders reported we have $2,884.66 in the account

Len reminded members to sign up to bring snacks for the meetings. Jim Nickless has October

Due to low interest, at this time we will not be placing a Club order to Craft Supplies USA. Monies submitted thus far will be returned.

Karen Finn gave a short explanation about the surveys she passed out regarding demonstrations. Twenty were filled out and retuned at the meeting. Generally, the results showed most of us are in favor of an on-line demo, of visiting other clubs, and overwhelmingly enjoy our own club member demos. Many great suggestions were given for future demos, including multi-axis turning, segment making, wood drying/storage, and many, many others. A full report of the results will be available in the near future.

Len covered the Artalicious show coming up on Sept. 20-21. We have a free double booth provided as a club demonstrator.

The topic of donating our turned birdhouses to the Artalicious silent auction was discussed

The Mid-Atlantic Woodturners Symposium is in Lancaster, PA October 4-6

Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild is presenting Turning 2019 at the Higher Ground Retreat Center in Southeast Indiana October 18-20

The Club lathe stand has been upgraded. Tom Jones allowed us to use his shop, trailer, and donated many miscellaneous pieces of hardware. Dave Finn donated a section of bowling alley as a new top and welded new lift pedals. Tom, Dave, and Rick Kimling spent several hours in Tom’s shop doing the renovations. Other members helping were Rich Enders, Tim Parker, and Lynn Southward.

We are still hoping to find a new Vice President soon. Tom Jones has stayed on as V.P., but is doing more than should be expected of him.

There were no items on the bulletin board for sale/swap/give away.

Jim Nickless reported he will be demonstrating at Hidden Lake Gardens October 19.

Fran Schaffer will be teaching Bow-Building at Sam Bueford School beginning October 5?

Bill Weber reported on the Mission Trip he was a part of to St Croix Virgin Islands

Many members gave accounts of safety issues!

Tom Jones presented Show and Tell items

Many great items and chunks of wood were raffled off

We took a break and enjoyed the snacks supplied by Rich Enders

The President’s Challenge for September was turn a birdhouse. The categories were “Large Functional” and “Small Decorative.”  Winners, by member vote, were Large Functional: First Place- Ron Birdsall; Second Place- Tim Parker. Small Decorative: First Place- Tom Jones; Second Place- Rich Enders.

Member Jerry Warner gave a very informative demonstration on getting the most from your bowl blanks. He showed us how to balance a blank, how to find the best balance of grain and bark, and other helpful tips.

Len announced the President’s Challenge for October is to turn a Natural Edge bowl. It’s your option weather you leave the bark on or off.

Len then closed the meeting

Minutes respectfully submitted by Dave Finn, Secretary

                                                                                         President’s Newsletter

We are trying a new format this month.  Instead of just one email from me, we are going to send two.  Our Club Secretary, Dave Finn, will compose an email with a report (minutes) of our last meeting.  I will send a newsletter with other info later in the month.  I appreciate Dave taking on this task.  As always your feedback is welcomed and appreciated.

Our Club’s participation in the Artalicious Arts Fair was well received.  40-50 people turned pens.  I Was surprised but pleased to see many adults, even seniors, turning pens, as well as young people.  Rick Kimling, Tim Parker, and Jim Nickless assisted with the pen turning.

We had continuous demonstrations of bowl turnings throughout the show.  Tom Jones, Bill Weber, Dave Finn, Karen Finn, and Das Madhavan all did bowl turning.

We had numerous people ask questions about our club.  Quite a few took literature with them and indicated a desire to attend a meeting.

We received feedback that people were very impressed with the turned birdhouses our members donated to the Not Just For Birds silent auction.  Thanks to all who donated.

Again, a big thank you to all who helped set up, worked the show, and helped with tear down.  I apologize if I did not mention everyone who helped.

Upcoming Events

The president’s challenge for this month is to turn a Natural edge bowl, with or without Bark.

Gary Ernst will be giving a demonstration on turning finials.

Jim Nickless signed up to bring the snacks for the October meeting

Bring items for show and tell and the president’s challenge and the raffle.

I hope you have all had a chance to look at the updated website.  www.miohwoodturners.org    Please let me know what you think.  I am open to suggestions.

Happy Woodturning

I am attaching a couple of AAW articles about turning spheres
