November, 2017 Newsletter

Our November 11 meeting was attended by 28 members.

The president’s challenge was to turn a wooden hat.  Winners I the Advanced category were:  1st place Tom Jones and 2nd place Lynn Southward.  There were no entries in the Novice category.

Scott Solsberg and Bob Seeberger did demonstrations on turning Christmas ornaments.  Thanks to both for very informative presentations.  The president’s challenge for the December meeting will be a turned Christmas ornament.

Upcoming shows:

  • Scott Phillips, host of PBS’ The American Woodshop, will be doing demonstrations on Saturday, December 2, at the Woodcraft Store in Toledo. See the flyer at the end of this letter.
  • Tennessee Association of Woodurners 30th Annual Symposium in in Franklin, TN 1/26/2018 – 1/27/2018. Here is a link to there website:  tnwoodturners.org

As I mentioned at the last meeting, AAW is offering scholarships to take woodturning classes at either Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, www.arrowmont.org,or John C Campbell Folk School, www.folkschool.org.  Due to our chapter size we can submit one candidate for the scholarship.  You must be a current member of AAW to quliafy.  This does not guarantee getting a scholarship, but it does put the name into a drawing.  You can go the the websites listed above to see the courses being offered.  If you would be interested in one of these scholarships, let me know.  We will put names of all interested persons into a random drawing which will take place at the December Meeting.  I will have a signup sheet at the meeting.  If you are interested but will not be at the December meeting, send me an email indicating if you prefer Arrowmont, John C Campbell, or have no preference.  You must also list your AAW member number.  You can also email me even if you plan to attend the meeting.  The winner’s name will be submitted by January 7 and winners will be notified by January 21, 2018.

We will be having a series of demonstrations on hollow forms.  For our December meeting Lynn Southward will be doing the first demonstration in the series.  He will show the simplest form, a bud vase.  This will make a great last minute Christmas present.  We’ll be following with more complicated forms in the following months.
