March, 2018 Newsletter

Our March 10 meeting was attended by 30 members.

The president’s challenge was to turn a hollow vessel.  Winners in the Advanced category were:  1st place: Mitch Mathis, 2nd place:  Gary Ernst  In the Novice category Tim Parker was 1sst and Rick Kimling was second.

The demonstration consisted of numerous people showing examples of how they salvaged turnings.  A lot of great ideas were shown.  Thanks to all who contributed.

 Upcoming shows:

  • The Detroit Area Woodturners has a demonstration by Jimmy Clewes on April 14 (same day as our meeting) from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM at the Pontiac Creative Arts Center. Jimmy will also be conducting one day hands on workshops on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, April 15, 16, 17.  More information including registration forms are available at detroitareawoodturners.com

  • Segmented Woodturning Symposium, October 11-14, 2018, Marriott West Hotel, St. Louis Missouri Registration is open segmentedwoodturning.org

At the April meeting we will continue with our demonstrations on hollow forms.  In April we will see a demonstration of captive hollowing tools, including both commercial and home-made tools.  Hands on time will be available for those who wish to try.

The President’s challenge for the April meeting is to turn something with only one restriction:  You can start with a 2” x 4” x 3 ft piece of wood of any species.  This is what you will use for your turning.   That’s it.  I envision a lot of glue-ups, but that is not necessary.

I have two signup sheets available

  • Sign up to help with setup or cleanup for a meeting
  • Sign up to bring snacks. Clyde Brasher signed up for the April meetings.  We need volunteers for the rest of the year.

Our April meeting will be on Saturday, April 14.

Our May 12 meeting will be at Eric Blom’s workshop.  More details will follow.

See you in April.
