March, 2017 Newsletter

Our March 14 meeting was attended by 29 members and one guest.

The President’s challenge for March was a miniature segmented turning.  Winners were Rick Kimling in the Novice division and Jim Nickless in the Advanced division

Mitch Mattis demonstrated full size segmented turnings

The president’s challenge will be a full size segmented turning.  The challenge will be for the May meeting, since we are not having a regular meeting in April

For our April meeting we will be having the Betty Scarpino Demonstration on creating turned-and-carved objects.    Specifically, she will

— turn an egg and demonstrate the dye-and-liming-wax finish

— Create a candleholder from a faceplate-turned disc, cut apart on the bandsaw and show how she turns and bleaches the fine grooves

— turn a pod from a green log, cut it apart on the bandsaw and hollow it using power-carving tools

— discuss the basics of starting a sculpture from a turned disc and how to achieve flowing curves

The presentation will be from 9:00 – 4:00.  Lunch will be provided.  Cost is $35.  To date we have 19 confirmed attendees.  If you have not confirmed but plan to attend, please contact Rich Enders asap.  His email is endersrh@gmail.com. Or you can call him at 517-404-9232 and leave a message

Upcoming Woodworking shows:

  • April 22 Woodcraft of Toledo has Ronald G Campbell as a guest demonstrator from 10 AM  – 4 PM.
    • Their address: 5311 Airport Highway Toledo, OH 43615  Phone:  419-389-0560
  • May 7 1st Annual Great Lakes Woodworking festival at the Adrian Center for the Arts in Adrian, from 12PM – 6PM.
    • Robert Sobb emailed me that he has signed up for a booth. The booths are 10 x 10 and he only needs a 4 ft table.  If anyone from the club needs to get in a booth you are welcome to contact him about sharing his booth.
    • Jim Nickless wrote me: At the meeting today one of you said that if anyone was interested in doing demos at the Adrian Center for the Arts, to let you know.  I checked and I am available on May 7th.  I have two lathes that are portable enough to take to the festival.  I also have all the tables and stuff available from doing demos at Hidden Lake Gardens. At Hidden Lake, I normally mix turning gifts for kids, (whistles, tops, cup & ball games), with a demo or two on more adult items, such as ornaments, pens, etc. I try to talk to the kids, (of all ages) as much as I can to stir up interest in woodturning.
      • Let Jim know if you have any interest
    • June 22-25 AAW International Symposium in Kansas City, MO

We need volunteers to come early to help with set up and/or stay late to help with cleanup.

National Flag Day is June 14.  You still have time to turn flag bases that will be given to veterans at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor.  Bring any you make to a meeting and give to Jim Nickless.  He will take the  0to the VA Hospital

Please consider joining AAW (The American Association of Woodturners).  This is a very valuable resource for woodturners.  Membership is $60/year and includes 6 bimonthly issues of American Woodturner

As I mentioned at the March meeting, AAW is offering an incentive program for new members.  During an exclusive sign up period from April 1 to June 30, new members can get their first year at the reduced rate of $30.  Go to this site to get that rate: http://tiny.cc/AAWNewGen

At the last meeting there was some discussion about wood safety.  Dennis Sisung forwarded me this website:  http://www.wood-database.com/  This site includes information on a large number of woods.  Information includes:  Color/appearance, Grain Texture, Workability, and Allergies/Toxicity

I hope you can make it to the April demonstration.  Again, if you have not already done so, please let Rich Enders know you plan to attend
