Treasurer Rich Enders Report: Current balance: $2,605.27
Announcements included:
Several birthdays for the last 6 months!
Due to Covid-19, this was our first in-person meeting since the Cindy Drozda demo in February 2020.
Artalicious is cancelled for 2020 due to Covid-19.
Jim Nickless reported that the VA has temporarily suspended accepting Flag Bases. We are still encouraged to turn them for future donations after Covid-19.
Woodcraft sponsors Turn for Troops, and we are encouraged to participate.
Tom Jones is asking for JPEG photos of “What I did during Covid-19.” These can include non-turning activities, too.
Snack sign-up sheet for 2020 is still being circulated.
Len Coleman is continuing to improve and update our Club Website. He has added a Member’s Only section. To be registered, go to the Website and click on Member’s Only. Fill out the registration info. Len will then “accept” you as a member, and you will then be able to access the Member’s Only area. There is also a Buy, Sell, Swap section!
There were no Safety Concerns this month pertaining to turning.
Show and Tell, Raffle, and Snack Break followed.
March’s President’s Challenge was to turn a Finial Bowl:
Novice winners were: David Smith 1st
Advanced winners were: Jim Nicklass 1st, Rick Kimling 2nd
Lynn Southward gave a demonstration on turning a wooden stem/base for a wine glass. By cutting the stem of a store-bought wine glass, he is able to turn a new base and lower-half of stem, then glue it to the upper part of the glass. Karen Finn “volunteered” to turn a base for next month!
Len’s Presidents’ Challenge is to turn a wine glass stem/base.
President Len Coleman then closed the meeting.
Minutes respectfully submitted by Dave Finn, Secretary
Monthly Newsletter from Len Coleman, President
It was good to be able to hold a club meeting again after four months off. We had 13 members in attendance. I totally understand why many were not ready to return. I hope you will soon feel comfortable in returning to our meetings.
As Dave Finn mentioned in the meeting minutes, Tom Jones is requesting that you send him pictures of “What I did during Covid-19.” These can include non-turning activities, too. Please send them in jpeg format.
Woodcraft of Toledo has confirmed that the annual “Turn for Troops” campaign will be November 7 & 8. This is the corporate date. The Toledo store will be having earlier turn in dates to make it easier for turners to maintain social distancing and still feel comfortable coming into the store. This is a program of turning slimline pens that will be given to men and women serving in the military. For every pen turned in you will receive a slimline kit, so the only cost to you is the wood, finishing, and your time. I will have more details soon about the finishing requirements. Since many of us have more time at home right now, it would be a good time to start on this project.
Dave Finn used his camera to record Lynn Southward’s demo last meeting. Now he and I are trying to get it loaded to our YouTube channel so it can be made available to all members. It’s probably something easy that we are missing, but once we figure it out—look out.
The President’s challenge is to turn a goblet. You can use Lynn’s method of turning the base for a glass top, or you can turn entirely from wood—your call.
The demonstration for the August 8th meeting will be given by Jerry Warner. Jerry will be talking about wood drying.
I hope to see you at the meeting
Happy Turning
Len
