January, 2019 Newsletter

Our January 12th  meeting was attended by 32 members and 1 guest, Eddie Weaver.

Rich Enders reported we have a balance of $2,624.80

The president’s challenge was to turn something for Valentines Day.  Winners in the Advanced category were:  1st place: Jim Nickless, 2nd place: Rick Kimling.  In the Novice category Wayne Miller was 1st, and Dave Finn was 2nd.

The president’s challenge for the February meeting is to turn something with a handle.

Cookies were provided by Tim Parker.  Al Goldstein signed up to bring cookies for the February meeting.  We have volunteers to bring snacks for March and April, but still need volunteers for the balance of 2019.

Several members gave demonstrations of woodturning jigs.  Thanks to  for the demos.

  • For anyone who likes to plan ahead:  The AAW 33rd International Woodturning Symposium will be in Raleigh, NC, July 11-14.  I will send more information as it comes available. 

You still have a few days to enter Woodcraft of Toledo’s Souper Bowl Sunday contest.  Enter a wooden bowl in one of three categories:  Yout6h, Novice, and Experienced.  First, Second, and Third place prizes will be awarded in each category.  There will also be a Best of Show Award and a People’s Choice Award.  Your entry must be submitted by February 3rd.

Congratulations to Dave Finn.  He is the recipient of one of the AAW Scholarships to John C Campbell Folk School

Rich Enders is still collecting dues for 2019 membership.  If you have not already paid, please consider doing so in February.  Dues are $35.  Checks should be made out to MIOH Woodturners.  I will also have sheets there for you to verify your email, address and other information to ensure our records are up to date.  Please take time to review your information even if you are not paying your dues at this time.

We have delayed placing the order for MIOH shirts until after the February meeting.  You can still bring your completed order form and check (payable to MIOH Woodturners) in February. email.

Craft supply offers a program where club members can combine their orders and get free shipping and a 10% discount.  If you are interested, you can go to the Craft Supply website www.woodturnerscatalog.com and pick your items.  We will place an order after the February meeting. I am attaching an order form to this email that you can use.  If you fill out the form in excel it will automatically compute the discounts.  If you have discount coupons you can apply them to your order.

Our February meeting will be on Saturday, February 9 at  10 AM at Christ Episcopal Church.

Rick Kimling will be doing the demo for February.  His demo will be on stabilizing and casting.

Bring items for show and tell and raffle, as well as the president’s challenge.
