Lynn Southward presented his recent Safety Concern. While converting an old glued-up tabletop into stool seats, a blank that was provided by his friend failed on the lathe, sending shards of wood into his face. His injuries resulted in a trip to the hospital for care. Fortunately, no bones were broken and no concussion was found. It did require ten stiches on his forehead, though. He commented that he will no longer be accepting blanks that were glued up by others, especially those with old glue joints.

Show and Tell, Raffle, and Snack Break followed. Thanks to Tim Parker for the Christmas cookies

December’s President’s Challenge was to turn a Christmas Ornament

Novice winners were: Ron Birdsall 1st, Dick Hachey 2nd

Advanced winners were: Gary Ernst 1st, Jim Nickless 2nd

Dave and Karen Finn gave a presentation on their experience at J C Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. Dave won one of the AAW’s class scholarships in 2019. He chose to attend the “Bountiful Bowls” class taught by Steve Cook of Savannah, Georgia. Dave brought in several examples of the items he turned during the class. Karen took “Spinning and Dying” on her own. She brought balls of yarn she made, along with some loose yarn

Ron Olin gave a very entertaining and informative demonstration turning a Turkey Call. We are pleased to see Ron back in action after his prolonged illness.

Len announced the January 2020 President’s Challenge: Turn a “Noisemaker”

President Len Coleman then closed the meeting

Minutes respectfully submitted by Dave Finn, Secretary

FOOTNOTE:

Prior to the meeting, Board Members were informed that Ted is retiring from taking photographs during events and monthly meetings. Individual volunteers will fill the void until it is decided what to do.

Upcoming Events

Thank you to all who donated toys for the Toys for Tots program.  Your generosity is appreciated.

There is still time to apply for an AAW Scholarship.  ALL AAW members are eligible to apply.  Each interested AAW member applies on line no later than January 15, 2020.  Winners will be notified by January 21, 2020.  I am attaching a copy of the notification I received which has more details.  If you are not a member but sign up before January 15, 2020, you can also apply for a scholarship.

AAW has upgraded its Website.  I am interested in hearing your feedback on the changes.

AAW has also announced a new initiative, Chapter Affiliate Memberships.  Any non-member can sign up for a Chapter Affiliate membership for free for three months.  After three months you can upgrade to a paid membership.  Affiliate members are not eligible to apply for the Scholarships.  I am attaching a document with more details about this.

Our January meeting will be on January 11.  Randy Maunard signed up to bring snacks.

The president’s challenge for this month is to turn a call.  Ron Olin demonstrated making a turkey call.  You can make any kind of call, including (with apologies for the bad pun) a child call aka a whistle.

Bring items for show and tell and the president’s challenge and the raffle.

Happy Woodturning
